Report of The Tenth Meeting of Thailand’s National Fisheries Refugia Committee.

The tenth meeting of Thailand’s National Fisheries Refugia Committee for the project on “Establishment and Operation of a Regional System of Fisheries Refugia in the South China Sea and Gulf of Thailand” was conducted by the Department of Fisheries on 16th December 2022. The meeting updated and followed up the notifications for fisheries refugia at two sites, Management Plan for Fisheries Refugia at two refugia sites, and financial matters.

The fourth meeting of the Site-based Fisheries Refugia Management Board in Trat Province and the first meeting of the Operational Management Board for Fisheries Refugia in Trat Province were jointly organized by Rayong Marine Fisheries Research and Development Center, Department of Fisheries on 22nd November 2022, at Trat City Hotel, Trat Province. It was aimed at consideration, discussion, and adoption of the operational management plan for fisheries refugia at Trat Site which was developed by the Operational Management Board for Fisheries Refugia in Trat Province on 2nd September 2022 and improved by Thailand’s National Scientific and Technical Committee on 3rd - 5th October 2022. The meeting was presided over by Ms. Thitiporn Laoprasert, Director of the Trat Fisheries Provincial Office, and Chairperson of the Site-based Fisheries Refugia Management Board in Trat Province. There were total of 45 participants who joined the meeting, including board members, resource persons, officers of the Department of Fisheries, project officers, and observers from the government and private sectors.

The fourth meeting of Site-based Fisheries Refugia Management Board in Surat Thani Province and the first meeting of Operational Management Board for Fisheries Refugia in the Coastal Seas around the Area of Koh Sed, Phum Riang Subdistrict, Chaiya District, Surat Thani Province were jointly organized by Chumphon Marine Fisheries Research and Development Center, Department of Fisheries on 15th November 2022, 09.00 – 17.00 hours, at Wang Tai Hotel, Surat Thani Province. It was aimed at consideration, discussion, and adoption of the operational management plan for fisheries refugia at Surat Thani Site which was developed by the Operational Management Board for Fisheries Refugia in the Coastal Seas around the Area of Koh Sed, Phum Riang Subdistrict, Chaiya District, Surat Thani Province on 30th May 2022 and improved by Thailand’s National Scientific and Technical Committee on 3rd - 5th October 2022. The meeting was presided over by Ms. Praulai Nootmorn, Executive Advisor for Fisheries Management, Department of Fisheries. There were total of 41 participants who joined the meeting, including board members, officers of the Department of Fisheries, project officers, and observers from government sectors and communities.

Thailand’s National Guidelines for the Establishment and Operation of Fisheries Refugia were developed during the implementation of the regional project on the Establishment and Operation of a Regional System of Fisheries Refugia in the South China Sea and Gulf of Thailand. They provide the concept of fisheries refugia with its goal and objectives, and the consecutive establishing processes which focus on fishery and ecosystem linkages. Apart from fisheries refugia, the information on marine fisheries of Thailand and their existing management schemes are also included in the Guidelines as the supplementary background.
