The smooth operation of heavy-duty transmission systems, such as diesel powered marine engines, depends to a large extent on the successful handling of the vibration. While many shafting failures have been traced to abnormal vibration at critical speeds, smooth operation implies more than freedom from breakdown. The rapid development of the internal combustion engine for marine propulsion and auxiliary uses, has highlighted the incidence of torsional vibration problems. A guaranteed smooth operating speed range is becoming a prerequisite of high-quality marine specifications.en
