The consultation addressed the need to generate fishery statistics, which are required particularly for Southeast Asian countries. These are, in addition to (1) catches and landings statistics, (2) statistics showing the economic structure and the socio-economic nature of fishery and aquaculture, (3) the socio-economic status of small-scale fishery and (4) catch and effort statistics by areas of capture. Fishery statistics play a key role for the management of fishery resources, for the measurement of the contribution of the fishery sector to the GDP and for the evaluation of the contribution of fishery to food security.en
