The stick-held dip net fishing has been widely operated in Japan since old times. The gear is suitable for small-scale fishing; it is easily operated at a lower coast and by smaller crews than some other types of gear such as purse seine, large set net etc. Furthermore, the merit of this fishing is that it can be carried out by any type of fishing boat which is also used for other kinds of fishing. For example, mackerel pike is commonly caught by stick-held dip net on board salmon gill net fishing boats during the period of salmon off season, around the northern part of Japan. The operation is done at night with fish luring lamps to attract the fish.en
